Okami HD Review: Amaterasu is back

After 11 years from the original release on Playstation 2, Okami is back on our monitors with a reissue in Full HD and 4K: find out what we think in our review

Despite the low diffusion among the general public, Okami he managed to win critical acclaim and win the heart of a niche with his unmistakable graphic style and very poetic nature.

of remaster it had been rumored in recent months and when it was confirmed by Capcom, fans were thrilled at the chance to savor the adventures of Amaterasu in high definition, but let's analyze it in detail.

Fallen legends

According to the plot, in a Japan anticoFeudal and fairytale, the forces of good have restored order to a world dominated by demons and darkness.

The heroes who helped chase away evil, at first idolized, will be forgotten in a long period of peace. When an unwary will reopen the Pandora's box the world will once again be scourged by evil.

The guardians of the Japan invoke the divine intervention of Amaterasu, Goddess of the Sun embodied in the white wolf Shiranui, to restore peace.

A negative note is the somewhat excessive slowness of the game which takes time to fuel at the narrative level and the voices of the characters do not help the use too much.

A do-it-all brush

Since its release, the main game mechanics of Okami it was the use of the brush that allowed us to trace our brushstrokes, which can take the form of horizontal lines to attack enemies with slashes, of circles to make the sun appear and thus restore light to the setting or control the courses of water so as to open new passages. It would have been an intriguing implementation to be able to use the brush with the touchpad PS4: unfortunately this was not the case, probably also due to its small size.

Going forward with the plot we will be able to unlock up to 13 new skills that will allow us to unlock previously inaccessible areas favoring the backtracking.

As for the fights, they are never too demanding precisely by the choice of the developers to make the gamer concentrate on exploring the wonderfully created world. The game also offers a series of boss fights, very varied from each other: only in these moments Okami demands a bit of impregnation, thus giving a lot of satisfaction to obtaining the victory.

All these elements make up a very fun gameplay for the duration of the work.

Amaterasu has never looked so good

The HD version adds a resolution in 4K, the ability to view it in widescreen or on 4: 3 screens. The improvements allow you to enjoy the wonderful adventure with greater screen cleaning. The game also maintains a fixed 30fps without any kind of dip.

La remastered it does not add anything new to the original work as it is only a porting to bring the game up current consoles and on PC. Exactly like in the past, therefore, the game can be completed in about 35 hours, which can increase if a lot of time is spent searching for secrets or even just observing the beautiful landscapes.

To complete our adventure there is a soundtrack of exquisite workmanship that increases the artistic beauty of the game.

Okami: conclusions

Okami HD is a remaster that perhaps dares too little but the game of Hideki Kamiya remains a pearl of the videogame landscape to be played and loved for its artistic side and its engaging and rewarding gameplay.

If you want an adventure outside the mainstream experience, buy it Okami and let yourself be transported to the lands of Feudal Japan.
